Soviet Legacy Is Shaping Vietnamese Football: From Tactics to a Championship Generation

Vietnamese football has regularly won at SEA Games, ASEAN Cup and in the U23 arena, but the roots go deeper than national pride. Beneath the surface lies a layer of Soviet and Russian tactical influence. From the 1960s through the 1980s, the Soviet Union reached four European Championship finals. Clubs such as Dinamo Moscow offered technical short passing, while Spartak Moscow showed a more direct, physical style. Russian-trained figures such as Tran Duy Long and Tran Quoc Tuan absorbed those principles. Tran Quoc Tuan, now VFF chairman, has emphasized the quality of the domestic league and school football.
