Analysis Impossible: When Input Data Is Empty

In my 29 years of reporting, I have never had to write an analysis with no data available. Until today. No article title, no source, no numbers, no tangible event to anchor to. Moscow could call at 3 AM and I would be ready. But an empty file is something even the most disciplined person in the press room cannot turn into a factual story. Numbers do not lie; only hasty readers mishear. But when no numbers exist, the only honest statement is to say so clearly. This is not an analysis piece. It is a reminder of process: verify sources before publishing, confirm information before drawing conclusions. In a sports media market where rumors spread faster than verified truth, refusing to analyze when data is missing is also a professional decision. An injury is a story — and I choose to tell it only with numbers. Without numbers, there is no story. Only a promise to analyze once complete information arrives.
